World Book Wednesday

Eagles, Fraternal Order of- "Major programs support heart and cancer research and aid retarded children."
The intent of the organization is good, but the language here could be considered offensive. This is why old reference materials are so valuable. Retarded, though politically incorrect now, was a replacement term for words like idiot and moron, themselves replacing earlier terms like cretin. Euphemism treadmill describes how a polite word can evolve and become offensive.
Semantics aside, the F.O.E. is still a large organization that, among other things, is active in the observance of Mother's Day. Go moms!


Electric Car- 
We've come a long way from this, but I think given
more than thirty years, we should have done better.

Electronics-
Given their similar taste in games, clothes, and hairdressers, you would think they
could agree on music rather than listen to separate selections on headphones.
"His record collection is like far out to the max, but he never wants to listen to Andy Gibb."
