Volume L

Laser- "In eye surgery, the physician uses a precisely focused beam from a gas laser to repair damaged tissue."
I didn't know this existed as early as the 70s. That's one brave
patient to allow such a new technology to be used on his eyes.

Library- I turned to my twelve year old for insight on this photo. I asked him if he knew what the drawers that dominate this library lobby were for. He said, "Maybe they hold utensils."

The card catalog simply does not exist anymore. I wonder what
libraries did with all the cards and drawers when they were phased out.

Happy Homemaker Monday

The weather:::
Today is supposed to be partly cloudy, but its clear and cool right now, a really fresh morning.

On my reading pile:::
The San Diego Reader, our local weekly newspaper for those of us who live on the fringe.

On my TV:::
We have an hour of Leave It To Beaver on at lunchtime that Anthony and I have been enjoying.

On the menu for this week:::
Whatever is cheap and close at dinnertime. The closer I get to my due date, the less I cook. I do plan to double up on the shopping this week and freeze some casseroles for after baby. I see a lot of macaroni and cheese in my future.

On my to do list:::
Grocery shop
Pack bag for birth center
Gestate

What I am sewing, crocheting, knitting or creating:::
I finished the purple bag for my husband and am now working on a 'flower' to decorate it. I have no idea what he will do with this bag.

Looking around the house:::
I see just a few things to be picked up and put away. A few dishes and a load of laundry should get us up to speed.

From the camera:::
I don't remember if this is pumpkin or spaghetti squash. We threw some seeds out in the yard last year and forgot about them. They just popped up on their own about a week and a half ago.

Something fun to share:::
I've been drinking Slurpees a lot. I don't like a lot of sugary drinks but I've found diet Pepsi, Crystal Light flavors, and some generic sugar free flavors at various 7-Elevens. Its a really nice treat on a hot summer day.

World Book Wednesday

Volume K

Kentucky- "Mountain Woman stands near her home in southeastern Kentucky. Since 1950, thousands of Kentuckians have moved from rural to urban areas."
Who is Mountain Woman? Is she some beloved national icon that I should be ashamed I don't know about?
Maybe she's just well known in Kentucky and the school kids get a day off and go to the Mountain Woman Parade.

Khrushchev, Nikita- I asked my 12 year old son if he knew what the U.S.S.R. was. He didn't know. I asked him about the Soviet Union. He said it was some army that fought in World War II and doesn't exist anymore. Times have changed; he probably thinks about terrorists and Al Qaeda instead of Khrushchev and the commies. Every generation has it's own stuff to worry about.

"Nikita S. Khrushchev ruled the U.S.S.R. from 1958 to 1964."

Happy Homemaker Monday

The weather:::
The forecast says cloudy this morning, sweltering this afternoon. June in San Diego is very predictable.

On my reading pile:::
Nothing. Maybe I'll borrow one of my mother's old Reader's Digest condensed books. I need something easy to read because I've been dozing off mid-sentence lately.

On my TV:::
Whatever is on when I collapse on the couch. Week 38 of pregnancy is all about going with the flow.

On the menu for this week:::
Once again I didn't make a menu or go shopping. The name of this blog is 'Just Getting By' after all. For a while there I was being a really good homemaker; its time to get back to my roots!

On my to do list:::
Wash and fold tiny baby clothes
Put my feet up
Figure out where to put a third kid in a two bedroom house

What I am sewing, crocheting, knitting or creating:::
I found a crochet hook and a ball of hideous purple yarn the other night. I haven't crocheted in years and was just messing around when my husband said he really liked the color. So I'm making him a simple bag to use at the shoe shine stand.

Looking around the house:::
Its dark in here because of the clouds. The house has developed a case of piles (not hemorrhoids; this is the type where a stack of mail turns into a stack of mail and a stack of coupons, then a little pile of action figures that need to be put away, and a box of baby clothes that need to be sorted, and a pile of laundry by the back door, and a pile of dishes next to the sink, a heap of shoes in the hallway, a little parking lot of hotwheels that migrates to wherever it is you're trying to step, and a mound of dirty/clean socks on the stairs).

From the camera:::
No pix this week. All the little piles of batteries around the house are dead.

Something fun to share:::
I apologize in advance for the cynicism; I have raging hormones. What sounds like fun to me is not having sausages for toes and boiled ham hocks for ankles. It would be fun to not pee when I sneeze.   It would be fantastic to get up from a sitting position without the sound of air being expelled from my mouth, nose, or elsewhere.

Volume J

Journalism- "Minicams, which are small videotape cameras, have revolutionized TV journalism. They can be used to tape a news story on the scene for later broadcast. They can also be used to relay the story to the TV studio as it happens by means of equipment on top of the van."

These days, your cell phone can do all that.

Jupiter- This article has a bunch of interesting facts about Jupiter. But I am more interested in the upper right corner of the illustration:

This illustration of our solar system contains a planet called Pluto. Today's solar system has only eight
planets since Pluto was demoted. I and my encyclopedia won't forget you, Pluto. We won't forget.
